What is impossible with God? This question keeps repeating over and over in my mind. My wife and I were reading a story recounting a part of the Revolutionary War. Part of that story included the victory of the American army under General George Washington at Trenton and then Princeton. Many times, during that last week of 1776 and the first week of 1777, the colonial army should have been completely wiped out. But what is impossible with God? He had a plan for this country.
In 1 Kings 18:21, Elijah the prophet, while calling Israel to repentance, posed a simple challenge. “If the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, follow him”. The priests of Baal numbered 450, and Elijah stood alone. So, Elijah proposed a test to demonstrate whose God the people should follow. In verse 24 he says: “And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.” The priests of Baal then spent the day pleading with their false god for a sign but to no avail. Elijah prayed to God to show the people that He was God and that Elijah was His prophet. In verses 38-39 the Lord answered Elijah’s call:
Fire From Heaven
“Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.”
What is impossible with God? In Mark 9 a man brings his son to the Savior to be healed and in verse 23, “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” and in verse 24: “And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”
Forward with Faith
Here is where I sit, much like the man pleading with the Savior. He was asked “What is impossible with God” and the man replied with tears, I want to believe, please help me believe!
Life will be filled with unexpected challenges, disease, hardships, losses, and seemingly impossible tasks. But when the impossible is placed before me, I am compelled to ask, “What is impossible with God?”. And my tear-stained answer filled with as much faith as I can muster is: “NOTHING!!” May your day be filled with faith and trust in the Creator of the universe in whose care you reside. The Lord, he is the God, the Lord, he is the God. Have a great day!
