Have you ever tried to recover from a nagging injury? My affliction was the result of a small tear in a tendon in my arm. Most likely this misery was caused by lifting a heavy weight with poor form putting undue strain where I should not. After this injury, I did all I could to make it better, even going to my doctor. But nothing was helping, and eventually, the pain grew even worse. I went back to the doctor for more treatment. It was decided that physical therapy was the best next step. Following weeks of physical therapy, my injury started to improve dramatically. The relief was sublime! I was so grateful to be free from this nagging pain and the restrictions it had placed on me.
Becoming Healed
During one PT visit, I told my therapist that she was just like Jesus Christ. This statement induced one of the funniest looks I’ve seen. And she said, “um…how is that?”. I explained how long this injury had been plaguing me and no matter what I did, I couldn’t get better. I said that her expert therapy was doing something for me that I could not do for myself, no matter how hard I tried. This is exactly what Jesus Christ does for each of us.
When we sin, I said, our souls are injured. No matter what we do, how hard we work, or how sorry we are, we cannot “heal” our sins. Only through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ are we truly healed. As we spoke, the Holy Ghost was bearing witness to the truth of these words. She and I both had tears in our eyes at the end of this discussion. She thanked me and told me that no one had ever said anything like that to her before.
Tears of Joy
As grateful as I was to finally be freed from physical pain, my joy from having my sins forgiven is seventy times seven. In Luke chapter seven, we learn of a woman, who was a sinner. And she, learning that Jesus was having a meal at the Pharisee’s house, brought a box of ointment. Kneeling at Jesus’ feet, the weight of her sins overwhelmed her, and tears flooded her eyes. Those tears washed the feet of the Savior, and He had compassion upon her.
In verses 47-48, Jesus says to Simon the Pharisee, “Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.” Sorrow is replaced with happiness. Tears of anguish are traded for tears of joy, and the woman went away in peace.
Jesus Christ Heals our Souls
I hope each of you can take a moment to express your gratitude for the Atonement of Jesus Christ. In and through Jesus Christ, we are healed from all our sins. He took on our infirmities, our sins, and our weaknesses. And, though our physical pains may not be healed in this lifetime, our spiritual pains can be healed each day! I love my Savior and am eternally grateful for His atoning sacrifice. Have a blessed day!
